"Top 50 Registered Investment Advisories" in Fortune magazine's
March 31, 2008 issue
Athena Capital Advisors was among the “Top 50 Registered Investment
Advisories (RIAs)” in Fortune magazine's March 31st, 2008
issue. "To
provide a glimpse of the fast growing advisor market, Fortune is for
the first time publishing three lists of the nation’s top investment
advisors. Created by Registered Rep. magazine, the top-50 lists rank
advisors in the U.S. by the amount of assets they have under
management. To be considered for these Registered Rep. rankings,
advisors must have at least 50% of their business with individual
investors. Each list provides a snapshot of the advisor marketplace
from a different vantage point. One list looks at those advisors
working for large “wirehouse” brokerage firms. The second
looks at top-performing advisors who work as independent broker/dealer
reps. The third ranks Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), who as
fiduciaries have greater responsibility for the advice and management
that they provide their clients." |

Assets Under Advisement, Family Wealth
Alliance, September 2007
Athena Capital ranked #1
in
average assets under advisement per relationship at $198.3 million in
this survey of 80 multifamily offices, which represent 70% of all U.S.
multifamily offices and 90% of the industry’s assets under advisement.
Only nine other firms reported average relationships in excess of $100
million, and them average reported relationship size for
multigenerational family clients was $47.9 million. The survey was
undertaken by the Family Wealth Alliance, an independent consulting and
research firm dedicated to helping ultra-high net worth families locate
best-in-class wealth managers, including multifamily offices,
throughout North America. The report also highlighted the accelerating
growth in the multifamily office industry over the prior year, in which
total assets under advisement surged 20.4% to $305.2 billion, and
attributed this growth in large part to wealthy families increasingly
recognizing the model as a compelling alternative to either maintaining
a private family office or entrusting their financial affairs to a
traditional institutional provider such as a bank or trust
company. Report

Athena's
Founder Dr. Lisette Cooper is profiled, Institutional Investor’s Alpha Magazine, September
2007
Athena
Capital founder Lisette Cooper is profiled in this article by Udayan
Gupta which focuses on the “quantitative muscle” she brought to bear in
1996 while working as a consultant to build the business model and
investment guidelines for Goldman Sachs’ private equity platform, while
simultaneously running Athena Capital, which she had founded three
years earlier. In both endeavors she drew from her prior experiences as
a senior strategist with Merrill Lynch Capital in San Francisco, where
she worked with institutional clients such as Bank of America,
California Public Employees’ Retirement System and the Public
Employee’s Retirement Association of Colorado to help design their
investment portfolios, and at MSCI Barra, where she specialized in
financial modeling for institutional investors. A scientist by
educational training (she holds an undergraduate degree from Wesleyan
University in earth and environmental sciences and a Ph.D. in geology
from Harvard University), Dr. Cooper credits Robert Rubin, then a
Goldman Sachs partner and future U.S. Treasury Secretary, with shifting
her career focus to the financial markets. While taking courses at
Harvard Business School in 1987, Dr. Cooper approached Rubin at a
Goldman Sachs cocktail party for potential recruits and asked for his
insights. She took his response to heart - to go into trading or
fixed-income research or capital markets, working with derivatives
products - although sometimes finds instances where the scientific and
financial worlds overlap. In June 2007 she and her co-authors were
granted a patent titled “Deriving a Probability Distribution of a Value
of an Asset at a Future Time.” Alternative

Magazine, April 2007
This
summary of the Third Annual Multifamily Office Study undertaken by the
Family Wealth Alliance notes that the emerging multifamily office
industry continues to grow and to expand the wide range of services
offered to clients. Most notable in this regard is the increase in the
use of alternative investments – hedge funds, real estate and private
equity. Of the 68 firms that took part in the study, Athena
Capital was one of only 11 featured in an accompanying profile which
focused on Athena’s unusual experience in alternative investments,
including the design and implementation of specialized portfolios of
hedge funds and private equity funds, and unique access to the most
superior special investment managers. Multifamily Offices ∙ Outlook 2007,
